Year 5 and 6 sportshall athletics
On Thursday 21st November, I took a group of competitive athletes to Robert Blake Science College for an afternoon of athletics! They took part in a variety of different team track races, obstacle races and field events (which included: javelin, speed bounce, chest through, vertical jump and standing long jump). Notable team stand out performances go to: Kamile and Courtney for their emphatic first place finish in the 6 lap paarlauf event, all girls for achieving a place in the top two during 3/6 track races and the boys for achieving a top three finish in 4/6 of the athletics events.
One notable individual performance was that from Ruby! Out of the five competing large schools, we were neck and neck for a first place finish in the 4×1 lap relay event (the final relay event!) As she turned to sprint home, Ruby dived for the finish line (maybe some element of a fall!!) but she dived for the finish to guarantee us a second place finish, just ahead of the third place finisher! This is proof that you should never give up! She got up, laughed and was proud of her efforts, just like I was and the whole team!
Unfortunately, teachers were only allowed to stay with the team on the track races, whilst the field events were happening at the same time so I wasn’t able to watch this! However, I’m sure the children will be talking about these events more in assembly! Well done all for an amazing effort! I was so proud of your behaviour, effort, sportsmanship, competitiveness and manners during the afternoon – you represented St John and St Francis superbly!
Here are some photos that the children took during the afternoon!
