How do polar animals keep warm?
Today we discussed the way that animals adapt to suit the habitats in which they live. We thought about how animals in cold countries have fur to keep them warm. We then discussed how we keep warm by wearing a hat, scarf and gloves. However, if we were to hold a piece of ice or snow in our hand, we would soon become wet and cold. We investigated how animals keep warm by having a layer of blubber (fat) under their skin. We put our hand in between two bags of oil and placed it in a bowl of icy water. We put our bare hand in as well and were surprised to find that the hand covered in our replica blubber felt much warmer.
