Antarctic Exploration – We are scientists!
Today we were Polar Explorers. We found out where the North and South Pole are and took an imaginary trip to Antarctica.
Firstly, we looked at how we would need to dress for the freezing temperatures in Antarctica.
We went outside and set up base camp. It was rather tricky but we managed it by working as a team. We huddled inside when the storm came!
We spoke about how ice is formed when water freezes. We enjoyed watching a snowflake and icicle form and marvelled at the beautiful patterns that were created.
We then had the opportunity to investigate ice. We thought about how it looked and felt, thinking of some amazing adjectives such as icy, smooth, hard, sparkly, soft, slippery, cold, wet and clear.
We discovered that salt changed the way that the ice looked and felt. We now understand why salt is used to make slippery surfaces safer in the winter months.
We watched a video where a man poured very cold water out of a bottle and it turned to ice instantly.
