Why play outdoors?

Playing outside is an important part of your child’s learning experience in Reception.  We follow the Forest School approach that allows children freedom and opportunity to explore their everyday surroundings.  Each week the children go outside with Mrs Nurcombe, our Forest School leader, and have the opportunity to find out and discover for themselves.

Forest School has been proven to build confidence and self esteem in children and as such gives the children the power to succeed back in the classroom.  Weekly activities are varied and often child led; for example, collecting and examining Autumn leaves, finding and counting conkers, picking apples and pears in our orchard area and finding out which minibeasts live in our school.  I could go on……

We hold the Forest School principle close to our hearts ‘there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing’.  With this in mind please make sure your children have a bag of suitable clothes in school at all times.  Not having old clothes to romp around in hinders their experiences and prevents them from comfortably getting involved in all things muddy and wet.  When we have made their clothes suitably revolting we will send them home to you, otherwise they can stay in school
