Welcome to Year 1

Hello everyone and welcome to year 1!

What an exciting start to the new school year.  The children have settled really well and have made a great start to year 1.  We have begun our ‘Marvellous me’ topic with the story of ‘Funny Bones’.  The children worked in teams to hunt for the hidden bones and to put their skeleton together.  They then labelled their own skeleton.  We found out that we are born with about 270 bones but by the time we are adults we have 206!  Did you know that the largest bone is the femur, found in our leg and the smallest is the stirrup in the ear?  We have been practising recognising numbers and accurately counting groups of objects.  Perhaps your child could see what numbers they can spot on the way to school or count how many lamp posts they pass.  Little activities like this make the walk to school more fun and help to support your child’s learning in school.

Please remember that your child should read every day if possible but at least 4 times a week.  Please ensure that you sign their reading diary so that they can get onto the reading rocket and earn a certificate!  Also, continue to practise the words sent home.  These can be kept at home and do not need to be returned to school but when you think your child is confident with recognising them (not having to sound them out), let us know by writing it in their diary and we can give them the next set.

Just a few reminders;

Forest school will be on Monday afternoons .  Please ensure kits are in school AND CLEARLY NAMED.

P.E. is on Wednesdays.  All children had P.E. kits this week so thank you.  However, we did notice that some were un-named.  I am sure you understand that we cannot ensure all 30 kits get to the right child if lost and un-named.

Likewise, please ensure ALL UNIFORM IS CLEARLY NAMED and that your child is prepared for the day, with a waterproof coat (as the weather is unpredictable at this time of year) and a water bottle, containing only water.  They may bring a second bottle with squash for lunch if they so wish, although water is provided at lunch times.

Finally we would just like to thank you for your patience at home time.  We promise that we will get to know your faces very soon!
